How To Clean Your Year-Round Christmas Tree

Having an artificial Christmas tree that stays up year-round can be a convenient and beautiful addition to your home décor. However, just like any other household item, it requires regular maintenance to keep it looking its best. We’ll guide you through some simple and effective techniques to dust your artificial Christmas tree and maintain its pristine appearance throughout the year.

Materials Needed:

  • Feather duster or microfiber cloth
  • Vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
  • Compressed air canister
  • Mild soap or tree cleaner

Step 1: Preparation

If you leave your tree up all year and change out the ornaments, in between holidays is the best time to perform your cleaning.  As you remove your ornaments, don’t forget to give them a quick wipe too.

Before starting the cleaning process, make sure the tree is unplugged from any electrical outlets. If it has removable sections, disconnect them to make the task easier. Lay a large sheet or drop cloth underneath the tree to catch any falling dust or debris.

Step 2: Choose the Method for Dusting

Using a Feather Duster or Microfiber Cloth

Using a feather duster or a microfiber cloth, gently brush the tree branches and foliage. Start from the top and work your way down, ensuring that you reach every nook and cranny. This method will effectively remove surface dust and any loose debris that may have accumulated.

Using your Vacuum

For a deeper clean, employ a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment. Set the vacuum to a low suction setting to avoid damaging the branches. Run the brush attachment over each branch, paying attention to the areas where dust tends to accumulate. This will help eliminate any dust that has settled deeper within the foliage.

Using Compressed Air Canister

This one can get dust everywhere so if you can move your tree outside, we recommend that. Compressed air cans also get cold fast so wear a gardening or work gloves too. If you have respiratory issues then wear a mask too. Starting at the top using short bursts direct the can to blow away dust particles. Maintain a safe distance from the tree to prevent any accidental damage.

Good Old Fashioned Washing

If your artificial tree has become particularly dirty or has sticky residue, you may consider giving it a gentle wash. This is another method to consider taking your tree outside.

Fill a basin with warm water and add a small amount of mild soap or a tree cleaner specifically formulated for artificial trees. Dip a soft-bristle brush or cloth in the soapy water and carefully clean the branches, starting from the top and working downwards. Rinse the branches thoroughly with clean water and allow them to air dry completely before reassembling or bringing the tree back inside.

If your tree is pre-lit, then use special artificial plant cleaners that are specially designed to clean Christmas trees and other foliage versus soap and water. Many light strands on trees are for Indoor use only and not meant to get wet. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions – but generally these are spray and let dry.

Step 3: Let it Dry, and re-fluff

After cleaning and drying, reassemble the tree sections carefully, ensuring that all connections are secure. Fluff and shape the branches as needed to restore their natural appearance. Use a handheld vacuum or lint roller to remove any remaining dust particles on the tree skirt or surrounding area.

Tip: The same techniques used for cleaning an artificial Christmas tree can be used for artificial garlands and wreaths.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your artificial Christmas tree clean and dust-free throughout the year. Regular dusting and occasional washing, if required, will help maintain its beauty and ensure it stays a delightful centerpiece in your home.

Remember to store the tree properly when not in use, in a cool and dry place, to further extend its lifespan. Enjoy the charm of your artificial Christmas tree, hassle-free and sparkling clean!
